Abundant Nitrate and Nitric Acid Aerosol in the Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere

The tropospheric and stratospheric nitrate aerosol is simulated by a sectional model coupled to the Community Earth System Model. mass fractional contribution aerosols significantly higher in upper troposphere lower stratosphere (UTLS) than that at surface. Both situ measurements simulations show accounts for about 30%–40% of tropopause Asian summer monsoon (ASM) region. Furthermore, condensed nitric acid particles account ?20% annual mean tropical tropopause, over 95% UTLS South Pole June-July-August. Our study suggests extremely cold ambient conditions tropics, ASM polar regions thermodynamically favor condensation ammonia acid. widely distributed global may be overlooked climate models.
